Dear Melwood Site Supervisors and Vocational Support Staff,
First, thank you for delivering on our mission every day, especially during these times when we are grappling with challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and witnessing the call for social justice which has led to protests in D.C. and around the country. We recognize that the recent protests have made travel through parts of the city and entering some worksites more difficult, especially around historic landmarks like the White House. Nothing is more important to us than our employee’s safety, security, and peace of mind during these troubled times. We have prepared safety tips (see attached) that we would like you to share with ALL Melwood staff working or traveling through Washington DC.
Given what’s happening, we also encourage anyone who is experiencing anxiety or stress to utilize our free and 100% confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP). By calling 1-877-252-8550, you will be referred to a counselor who can talk to you about what’s on your mind -- whether they are related to the recent protests, the coronavirus, or just how to maintain a healthy and productive life during these unprecedented times. Please also share this with ALL Melwood staff, see attached.
Please know that all of us at Melwood appreciate your dedication and hard work to deliver on our mission, even in these trying times. We support you and are proud of the work you are doing on the frontlines fighting COVID-19. We are one Melwood family – standing strong together so we can make it through to a better tomorrow.
Please stay safe,
Cynthia Gervais

To help yourself, your teams, or your clients working or traveling through DC, we encourage all Melwood employees to:
Follow all instructions from police or other first responders.
Be sure to travel with your Melwood badge and your Government Credential (CAC or PIV card) when traveling to and from work.
Be aware of your surroundings. If you find yourself in or near a dangerous situation or anything that makes you uncomfortable, please move away from the area. And, if for any reason you feel threatened, first find a safe area and then call 911 and then report the incident to your supervisor or a Melwood HR Generalist at 301-599-8000.
Let others know where you are going and when you will be arriving or returning. Communicating your travel plans with others is a great way to look out for each other.
Be sure to keep your mobile phone charged in case of emergency situations.
Always communicate with your supervisor and inform them of your situation. Let them know if you’re unable to reach your worksite or if you feel unsafe commuting to work.
If possible, walk or travel with another person to your destination.
