For more than 40 years, Melwood’s Access Adventures has provided fun and relaxation through our well-planned programs for people of differing abilities. We focus on small group, community-based offerings for people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy this type of experience. Access Adventures participants have enjoyed supported programs to the beautiful Island of the Bahamas, Disney World, Hershey Park, Myrtle Beach, Las Vegas, Dollywood and many other exciting locations. For the participant who likes to remain close to home, we customize adventures right in our backyard delivering an exciting weekend retreats at our Melwood Retreat and Recreation Center in Nanjemoy, MD.

Our respite program is designed for individuals with differing abilities who are 18 years or older. Access Adventures supports individuals in a 1:4 staff to participant ratio. Individuals needing additional assistance based on behavioral or physical needs can be accommodated for an additional fee. Access Adventures does not guarantee in-room 24-hour supervision; our staff support the participants during normal waking hours. If in-room supervision is required, it must be pre-arranged and there will be an additional cost. All participants need to complete an online Registration form and Skills Analysis form prior to being accepted for the Access Adventures program.
Access Adventures hires qualified, experienced and mature staff. All staff receive specialized training and are certified in CPR and First Aid. Certified Medication Administrators accompany all programs to oversee the dispensing of medication with a registered nurse on-call during each supported respite program.
Groups of six or more can design an experience of their own. With our experienced program leaders, Access Adventures is sure to provide you with an experience that will meet all your needs.
