Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex developmental disability that affect’s an individual’s ability to communicate and interact with others around them. According to Bloomberg, there are more than 3.5 million people in America who live with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. In President Obama’s proclamation on World Autism Awareness Day, he states, “ Every person deserves the chance to reach for their highest hopes and fulfill their greatest potential.  On World Autism Awareness Day, we reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that belief is a reality for all those who live on the autism spectrum.”

Melwood has a longstanding history of providing programs and opportunities for people living with Autism to succeed at home, on the job, and in the community.

Various departments participated in the Light it Up Blue (#LIUB) campaign throughout the month of April. We attended a number of events and donned blue in support of the adults and youth Melwood serves who are living with the disorder. Melwood’s Senior Management team (Pictured on the right) wore blue in recognition of Autism Awareness Month at their April meeting. We also utilized our social media channels to update our followers about a number of issues surrounding Autism. We encourage all to continue to raise awareness throughout the year.  To learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Light it up Blue campaign, please visit: www.autismspeaks.org.
