Melwood offers a number of career opportunities to people of differing abilities. Find your new career here.
On September 16th, Deputy Secretary William Frank presented Kira Maginnis, a summer counselor at Melwood’s Recreation Center with a Governor’s Citation. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the state of Maryland from Governor Larry Hogan, the Maryland Department of Disabilities and the Developmental Disabilities Administration. Kira, along with a handful of other Maryland professionals, were chosen because of their supportive and encouraging talents to allow individuals with differing abilities to fully participate in the community.
Kira began her relationship with Melwood as a camper where she discovered her passion for working with people with differing abilities. Soon after her first year, Kira was presented with the opportunity to become a summer counselor for our Access Adventures group. Supporting over 100 people with differing abilities while they are on vacation, Kira provides exceptional personal care and emotional support to the people we serve.
Kira took the above photo with David Hemmis, a participant in our Access Adventures program, this past June at Cape May County Zoo. She recalls how, at the start of the trip, David was extremely anxious about being away from home. Kira quickly took charge and provided David with the support he needed to have a great vacation. This is just one example of Kira’s ability to form meaningful relationships with the people we serve. We sincerely congratulate Kira for receiving this honor.
