Arlington, VA – More than 400 people gathered last week to kick off the holiday season with Arlington’s annual Miracle on 23rd Street. For more than 50 years, this time-honored holiday tradition has brought together local families as well as community and business leaders to celebrate the season.

Melwood, a leading nonprofit employer of people of differing abilities and injured veterans in the greater Washington, D.C. area, hosted this year’s event after recently merging with the event’s previous host, Linden Resources.

“Melwood is proud to continue this important community tradition as we integrate our operations and renovate our Arlington campus,” said Cari DeSantis, President and CEO of Melwood. “We are excited to become part of this vibrant community and we hope to make this long-standing tradition better every year.”

Melwood will also launch a new workforce program in Arlington in January 2019, called abilIT. The program will train injured veterans and participants on the autism spectrum for careers in cybersecurity and IT.

This year’s Miracle on 23rd Street celebration took place on Friday, November 30, at 750 23rd Street South in Crystal City. The event kicked off with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree, followed by the much-anticipated arrival of Santa, escorted by representatives of Arlington’s Police and Fire Departments. Children took pictures with Santa, had their faces painted and everyone enjoyed free cupcakes and hot cocoa. Samsung provided virtual sleigh rides and a band played Christmas carols.

Several state and local officials also joined in the festivities. Melwood would like to thank all of the sponsors for helping make this wonderful event possible, including:

  • Burke & Herbert Bank
  • Freddie's/Federico Ristorante Italiano
  • Aurora Highlands Civic Association
  • Geva and Jane Real Estate Group
  • Samsung
