Melwood's Economic Impact Report

Over the last year Melwood’s Finance team, led by Chief Financial Officer, Myron Thomas, conducted a study to determine the organization’s impact on the economy. Using the IMPLAN^® software along with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Census data, they developed a model that measured the organization’s financial impact in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, by calculating the number of jobs created, income, Gross Regional Product, output and contributions to state and local taxes.

The results of the study revealed the following:

•      Melwood employs approximately 1,586 full and part-time jobs (including 160 induced jobs).
•      Melwood generates $49.7 million in income (including $6.7 million induced income).
•      Our operations produce $14.2 million in induced economic output that benefits the region
•      We produce more than $1.4 million in induced state and local sales taxes.
•      Melwood’s $43 million payroll added $22.4 million of induced economic benefits to its primary impact region for a combined total of $65.4 million.

The report illustrates the benefits of Melwood’s social-entrepreneurial model.
