I have learned a lot of tough "gardening" lessons through trial and error. So, I thought it would be a great idea to give a few of the key tips I've learned along the way...to save my readers from making the same mistakes!

  1. Never weed when the ground is really dry. Always water the ground first.
  2. If the soil is not loose enough to dig out the root of the plant do not weed. You will only grab the top of the plant.
  3. If you have an option, always try to schedule your gardening in the early morning or late evening. Try to avoid gardening between the hours of 10a.m. - 2p.m. The sun is strongest during those peak hours. So, you will exert far more energy during that time of the day.
  4. All plants come with a tag that will give details on its growth habits. Be sure to allow enough room for the plant to reach its full size. You don't want your plants competing for space!
  5. When designing the layout of your garden you may want to consider planting in odd numbers and try to avoid straight lines. That way, your garden will look more natural and less formal.
  6. Last, but certainly not least, be wary of the 1/2 off sale at your local nursery or hardware store. If you decide to buy a plant that is on sale for 50% off its original price, 9 times out of 10 you will purchase a half dead plant. Trust me, I've learned!
